Do you have wheelchair access?

We have the Pine Room and its adjacent washroom on the 1st floor.   There are two entrances to the 1st floor - one has 2 steps and the other has 1 step.  If a person can manage one step and no special bars in the washroom or around the bed, then a wheelchair is fine.

Do you allow pets?

Yes with restrictions, for cottage accommodations,  and no inside the main lodge.  This question has a 2-part answer.  It is necessary to know that the main lodge is on a hilltop and the cottages are in the valley below at the water's edge.

Main lodge
We do not allow pets inside the main lodge at all with no exceptions.  However we do have a lot of land here.  If owners can securely tie up pets outside away from the house during their stay, then they are welcome.  We have several peafowl here and we do not want dogs or cats running around chasing them.

Cottages
We have allowed pets in the past and many people do ask.  Pet owners are asked to act responsibly with respect to others.  We will require a $50 pet deposit to cover excessive cleaning or soiled carpets.  This deposit may or may not be refundable at departure depending upon passing an inspection.  Larger damage charges may be assessed for carpet, mattress, or other damages.  Any "mean-spirited" disposition of an animal towards others will require it to be chained when outside.  Any complaints from other guests out of fear or noise will require the pet to be chained farther away and at all times on a leash.  Failure to comply may require us to ask the pet owners to leave with their pet.

Do you have a boat dock?

Yes, we have a small boat dock extending 40 feet from the edge which guests can dock 1 or 2 boats for day use.  If the boat draft is more than 27", the motor should be raised before approaching the dock.  We are not a marina and do not have wave breakers installed for calm waters.  Rice Lake changes daily.  Often it is extremely calm one day and  very rough the next day or vice versa.  On rough days, you should not attach your boat to the dock.  We are not responsible for damaged boats.

If you have a 16' or less boat some have put their boat in and out of the water using their trailer.  However we do not have a boat launch and it is not deep.  For normal 4' deep water launches, you should use launches which are 1 kilometer away in both directions.  This is recommended.  I have often anchored my boat off shore away from the dock during rough waters, rather than take it out of the water every time.  You be the judge.  However, if it breaks loose, you may have trouble. We are not responsible in any way for damaged boats.  What I recommend is, for convenience, on calm days use our dock for day use, and for storage, go to the marina.  On rough days, you can try my method as long as you keep an eye on it.

Do you rent boats?

No, we do not rent boats.  However, several marinas do nearby.  Their prices range from $100 to $200 a day depending upon what you rent.  A large marina is 2 km away (hike or drive).

Do you have a beach?

Yes, a non-guarded beach.  Swim at you own risk.  This is not a public beach and there is no lifeguard, but you can swim at your own risk.  The lake bottom at the shoreline consists of mainly mud and sand, with a few small rocks.  The water is relatively shallow which makes it pretty safe for swimming.  There is a gradual incline into deeper water.  However, the water is only about 4' deep after traveling out 100' from shore.  It is roughly 2.5 feet at the end of our dock.  Small children should not walk out on the dock unattended.  No children should go near the water without adult supervision.  The water temperature is very pleasant during the summer.

When was the main house built?

As best as we can discover, the house was built in 1930 by Raymond and Rhoda Latta of Cleveland, Ohio, with railroad money.  It was one of three properties built with the same stone structure.
